***Usually I put my disclaimer at the end However I feel the beginning is IMMPERATIVE.***
Suicide and depression are silent often times un-noticed enimies of the mind and a topic that have personally affected my life. From family members and friends to many other people I have met. As I have been preparing to host my first space this week I have thought out and planned my actions very carefully. The results are sad and yet not very suprising and the reason suicide and depression are called "Silent Killers." The clues and the hints that I dropped this week are often times spread out for many over a longer period of time and to see accelerating them without much concern from others shows me how much more importaint what I am doing really is. Especially given the fact that I myself deal with depression and have situations I am struggling with. The known statistics are that one out of ever 20 people deal with this and it is the number 4 cause of death in the world for people ages 15-29 or you can think of it as 80 people die of suicide every hour. For every death their are 3 hospitalizations, 8 emergency department visits, 38 attemps and 265 serious thoughts reported. sources: CDC.org WHO.org

The Silent Killer

Jake had always been a quiet and shy person, but lately he seemed even more withdrawn and distant. He rarely spoke to anyone, not even his parents or his best friend Sam. He spent most of his time in his room, browsing the internet or playing video games. He didn't go to school anymore, claiming he was sick or tired. He didn't have any hobbies or interests, except for writing. He had a blog where he posted his poems and stories, but he never shared them with anyone he knew in real life. He only had a few followers online, who sometimes left comments on his posts. Jake felt like they were the only ones who understood him, who cared about him. He felt like they were the only ones who could see the clues and hints he was leaving behind, the ones that revealed his true feelings and thoughts.

One day, Jake decided to call Sam and ask him if he wanted to hang out. He hadn't seen him in weeks, and he missed him. He hoped that maybe Sam could cheer him up, or at least distract him from his dark thoughts. But when Sam answered the phone, he sounded annoyed and busy. He said he had a lot of homework to do, and that he couldn't talk right now. He said he would call Jake back later, but he never did. Jake felt hurt and rejected. He wondered if Sam still cared about him, or if he had found new friends who were more fun and interesting than him. He felt like he had no one to talk to, no one who understood him. He felt like he was a burden to everyone, and that they would be better off without him. He wrote a blog post that night, titled "The Last Flower". He wrote about how he felt alone and hopeless, how he wished he had more support, how he was trying to figure things out, but nothing seemed to work. He wrote about how tired he was of everything, and how he just wanted to go to sleep and everything jst work itself out. He ended the post talking about how the struggle is real.

The sad truth was that many of the signs that Jake was suicidal went unnoticed by the people around him. Even his parents and his best friend didn't realize how much he was hurting, and how close he was to ending his life. They thought he was just going through a phase, or that he was being lazy or moody. They didn't pay attention to his blog posts, or his changes in behavior, or his subtle hints. They didn't ask him how he was feeling, or listen to him when he tried to open up. They didn't notice when he stopped eating, or when he started drinking more, or when he gave away some of his favorite things. They didn't notice when he said goodbye to them, or when he locked himself in his room for the last time. They didn't notice until it was too late.

End Note

You may ask what you can do in a situation like this. Let me reffer to one of the best studies put out on addiction, PTSD and depression from aphapublications.org in referance of soldiers comming back from the Vietnam War. When a person can make genuine connection with others and feels safe when they confide in them the rates dropped from aproximatly 98% down to 12% when time and additional resources are factored in.
