A Weekend to Remember

Lisa had been looking forward to Memorial Day weekend for months. She had planned a road trip with her best friend, Kelly, to visit their old college town and reminisce about the good times they had there. They had booked a cozy cabin by the lake, packed their favorite snacks and playlists, and even bought matching sunglasses for the occasion.

But as Lisa was loading her suitcase into the car, she got a phone call that changed everything. It was from her brother, Matt, who sounded distraught and choked up. He told her that their grandfather had passed away last night after a long battle with cancer. He said that the funeral was scheduled for Monday morning and that he needed her to come home as soon as possible.

Lisa felt a surge of shock and grief. She loved her grandfather dearly. He had been like a father to her ever since her own dad left when she was little. He had taught her how to ride a bike, how to fish, how to play chess, and how to laugh at life’s challenges. He had always been there for her, supporting her dreams and cheering her on. She couldn’t believe he was gone.

She hung up the phone and wiped away her tears. She looked at Kelly, who had overheard the conversation and was waiting for her with a sympathetic expression. Lisa knew what she had to do. She apologized to Kelly and told her that she couldn’t go on the trip. She explained that she had to fly back home and be with her family. She asked Kelly to understand and forgive her.

Kelly hugged Lisa and told her that she was sorry for her loss. She said that she understood and that she would always be there for her. She offered to drive Lisa to the airport and help her with the arrangements. She said that they could reschedule the trip for another time, when Lisa felt ready.

Lisa thanked Kelly and told her that she was the best friend anyone could ask for. She said that she would miss her and that she hoped they could still have some fun this weekend. She said that she wanted Kelly to remember their grandfather too, because he had loved Kelly like his own granddaughter.

They got into the car and drove to the airport, talking about their memories of Lisa’s grandfather along the way. They laughed at his jokes, cried at his wisdom, and smiled at his kindness. They realized that he had touched their lives in so many ways and that they would always carry him in their hearts.

As Lisa boarded the plane, she waved goodbye to Kelly and thanked her again for everything. She felt sad but also grateful. She knew that this weekend would be hard, but also meaningful. She knew that she would honor her grandfather’s memory by being with her family and celebrating his life. She knew that he would want her to be happy and to remember those she loved.
