Web3 Twitter Spaces: A Glimpse at the Unrecognized Content Creation of the Future

The term content creator seems to be most often used to describe people who make entertaining content that is available online. Possibly based on who gets the most attention, the term is typically used to describe YouTubers, TikTokkers, and, yes, as a self-proclaimed way to say, “I have an OnlyFans.”

Content creation is the contribution of information to any media and most especially to digital media for an end-user/audience in specific contexts. Content is "something that is to be expressed through some medium, as speech, writing or any of various arts"[1]

The above definition describes well why the connotation of content creation seems to imply a specific type of content through a medium that is typically taken to mean video. However, technically, content creation can be about anything and target any audience.
Video Content
Video content is ruling social media right now. The most used apps include TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat, and Instagram. Capcut, a video editing application, also contends for a most used app. But Capcut competes with a swath of video editing services, including SaaS, or software as a service. Canva, Adobe Spark, Snappa, and Crello are a few. Even more “traditional” media sources like news articles will often include a video with their digital article.
Image Content
Enter memes. A good meme can grab attention similarly to how a video can. A meme is interesting enough to grab the viewer’s attention long enough to send a message. It delivers information.
Another form of effective image content is the glamorous, or “don’t you want to be rich too?” look. Ever wonder why the most liked images often show successful people? People in a nice suit, in a nice hotel, or on a nice beach? This imagery is often present in video content as well.
Text Content
Text content has a fairly large variance in delivery and purpose. It could be a Tweet, a Facebook post, a blog, a whitepaper, the information on a website, or, hell, a whole book. Shout out to movies, photo albums, and digital art collections so they don’t feel left out from the above categories.
However, overall, written content seems to be the way to deliver details, not draw attention. Posts with images or video get more engagement than posts with just text. Why would someone read a book on Web3 when they can just watch a video about Web3? Yet, those people that truly understand a certain topic, those that see less value in other media, and those that need to find the specific piece of information, will tend to seek text content.
Audio Content
Another big form of content is audio content. This content, with the exception of music, generally comes with a similar weight of text mixed with video content. Podcasts, audio books, and even news broadcasts deliver information to listeners that, possibly, can do something else as they listen, like drive a car or cook dinner. Twitter Spaces can be audio content as well. However, as we will see, they are more than that.
Interactive Content #TwitterSpaces
Web2 gave us the ability to interact with the internet. As the internet evolved, so did the ability of humans to interact. While video, image, audio, and text supply content, interactive forms of media allow contribution of content in ways the other medias currently do not offer.
Discord, Telegram, and WhatApps can improve communication and content sharing. However, this happens less publicly than other platforms. Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok allow interactiveness and contribution but it is not always in real time. A key point here is that the chat apps allow increased scaling of audio and visual “conference” type settings, while the social media platforms typically allow a few people to take the stage and limit the audience interaction to comments. There is not much of a direct contribution. Twitch is similar.
What is unique about Twitter Spaces is that they allow large amounts of people to congregate around audio content that is being created in the moment and, if the host allows, can join in creating the content. Not only does this improve communication and information sharing, this is what Web3 community is all about. What is also unique about Twitter Spaces is that they are public broadcasts of the content. While the organization and delivery of information about Twitter Spaces to Twitter users could be better, it does says something that open Twitter Spaces show on top of the Twitter feed of mobile devices.
In short, Twitter Spaces are the in-between of opening up a group chat in a chat app and having a more information sharing discussion as seen with YouTube Live or any Podcast platform. It is also interesting enough to note, in terms of such a larger audience in the video content market, what will Twitters Spaces evolve to?
Content, Information, and Education
You may have noticed the shift of focus in this writing went from entertainment to information. Going a step beyond content that delivers information, whether it be straight marketing or straight alpha, content has another ability to be used for education. This again is why interactive content creation is key to the quality of content in terms of education and Web3 communities in general.
The Web3 space is still very new. It changes every day, or every hour if you really pay attention. As they say, the best way to learn is to teach. Everyone in Web3 is still learning. Because the Web3 space is being created by people in the community, everyone in Web3 should be sharing information to make the community better. Everyone in Web3 should be teaching to learn. Everyone in Web3 should be creating content.
The Future of Content Creation
Possibly, you are wondering why gamers have not been mentioned. While streaming would fall under the video content category, the games themselves are interactive content. Just like people didn’t understand email, then the internet took over the world, just like people didn’t understand MySpace, then Facebook took over the world, it is possible people just don’t yet understand the Metaverse.
However, as stated, content creation can attend any medium. More tangibly, NFTs have several uses and mediums. Artists, writers, and musicians have been mostly left out of this blog so far, as well as educators. While owning data you create is awesome, and being able to monetize your creations in self-owned ways is amazing, the point here is on creating content and interacting in new ways.
But let’s not leave out how much amazing art comes out of the NFT community.
Just as we see people sharing cutting edge information and ideas in Twitter Spaces, think about how Web3 will change Web2 in terms of what made Web2 what it is, interaction based. Think about collaborative video, image, and movie making platforms. Think if the Host, Co-host, and speakers could monetize there time in a Twitter Space by creating smart contracts to agree on the shared profits of selling access to the space. Think about streaming a show online or even in a Metaverse, turning it into a NFT when it’s done, then adding the show to your social media ECOSYSTEM, which could include that Metaverse itself.
That is what owning your data allows, a creator based ecosystem. Web3 turns a network into an ecosystem because we can take our interactions and turn them into mutual contributions for mutual results. The blockchain created a data and financial system that allows content creators to own, fractionalize, and share our own creations in new ways. The question is, how will we evolve with it?
