Next.js was released by Vercel on 2016 as an open source project and has gained in popularity ever since. What do the numbers say?
Next.js: The Numbers
By 2021, Next.js had over 6.2 million downloads. This number was up 50% from the previous year.
At the time of this blog, Next.js shows 4.8 million weekly downloads. The chart from NPM shows the number of downloads is steadily climbing.
Next.js: How does it stack up against others?
The image below is from Statista data showing the Most used web frameworks among developers worldwide, as of 2023.
The data reports that 16.67% of web developers used Next.js as of 2023. About four out of every ten developers that used React also used Next.js.
Note: Next.js runs on top of React which means developing with Next.js requires React
The data also shows Node.js is above React as the most used framework. Possibly this shows a shift of importance to fullstack/backend infrastructure. Something the differences between Next.js and React may also demonstrate.
However, while the surveyed population was developers, not no code or little code builders, there are several top web development frameworks that are used more than Wordpress. For context, Wordpress is the most used website builder in the world, just not for developers.
Angular and Vue.js are similar alternatives to React. Notably, Next.js, working on top of React, has similar developer usage to the top React alternatives.
For more context, ASP.NET is a C# based development framework built by Microsoft and ASP.NET is the open source version.
As of 2023, one of six web developers have used Next.js. This is noteworthy.
