Not all stories end as you think they would.

Depression on the Hilltop

He stood on the hilltop, looking at the city below. He felt nothing but emptiness inside. He had been living in this city for ten years, but he had never felt at home. He had no friends, no family, no love. He had a job, but he hated it. He had a small apartment, but he never felt comfortable there. He had nothing to look forward to, nothing to live for.

He wondered how he ended up like this. He used to have dreams, ambitions, passions. He used to have a girlfriend, who loved him and supported him. He used to have a purpose, a direction, a meaning. But then everything changed. He lost his girlfriend in a car accident. He lost his job in a recession. He lost his confidence in himself. He lost his hope for the future.

He tried to cope with his loss and grief, but he couldn’t. He tried to find new opportunities and connections, but he failed. He tried to seek help and support, but he was rejected. He tried to fight his depression, but he surrendered.

He felt like he had nothing left to lose. He felt like he had no reason to live. He felt like he wanted to end his pain.

He took a step closer to the edge of the hilltop. He looked down at the ground below. He felt a surge of fear and doubt.

He hesitated.

He heard a voice behind him.

“Hey, are you okay?”

He turned around and saw a young woman standing there. She had long brown hair and bright green eyes. She wore a red dress and a smile.

She looked at him with concern and curiosity.

“Who are you?” he asked.

“I’m Alice,” she said. “I live in that house over there.” She pointed to a small cottage on the other side of the hilltop.

“What are you doing here?” he asked. As he was wondering about the house that had never been their before.

“I was taking a walk,” she said. “I like to come here sometimes and enjoy the view.”

She looked at him with interest and sympathy.

“What about you?” she asked. “What are you doing here?”

He didn’t answer. He didn’t know what to say.

She moved closer to him and touched his arm gently.

“Are you okay?” she repeated.

He shook his head slowly.

“No,” he said softly.

She nodded understandingly.

“I can see that,” she said kindly. “You look sad.”

He looked away from her.

“I am sad,” he said quietly.

She tilted her head and smiled warmly.

“Do you want to talk about it?” she asked.

He looked back at her.

“Why?” he asked.

She shrugged and laughed lightly.

“Why not?” she said.

He stared at her for a moment. He felt something stir inside him. Something he hadn’t felt in a long time.

Curiosity.

He wondered who she was and why she cared about him.

He wondered what she would say if he told her his story.

He wondered what it would be like to talk to someone who listened and understood.

He wondered what it would be like to feel something other than emptiness.

He took a step back from the edge of the hilltop.

He looked at her with hesitation and hope.

“Okay,” he said slowly.

She smiled brightly and took his hand gently.

“Okay,” she said happily.

She led him to a nearby bench and sat down next to him.

She looked at him with attention and compassion.

“Tell me,” she said softly.

He opened his mouth and began to speak.

He told her everything. He told her about his girlfriend, his job, his depression. He told her about his loneliness, his hopelessness, his despair. He told her about his thoughts of suicide.

She listened to him attentively. She didn’t interrupt him or judge him. She didn’t pity him or patronize him. She didn’t try to fix him or change him.

She just listened.

She listened with empathy and respect. She listened with curiosity and compassion. She listened with interest and understanding.

She listened like no one had ever listened to him before.

He felt a weight lift off his chest. He felt a relief in his heart. He felt a connection in his soul.

He felt like he mattered.

She looked at him with sincerity and warmth.

“Thank you for sharing your story with me,” she said gently. “I appreciate your honesty and courage.”

He looked at her with gratitude and awe.

“Thank you for listening to me,” he said sincerely. “I appreciate your kindness and care.”

She smiled softly and squeezed his hand.

“You’re welcome,” she said sweetly. “I’m happy to be here for you.”

They looked into each other’s eyes and that is when he noticed that she wasnt a person as he thought as he could see through her goastly figure.

He Asked again who she was and where she came from and she repeeated her name and pointed again to a field where moments ago their had been a loveley cabin that was never their and than he caught a glimpse of what he thought was wings and felt a pang in dispair again as he relaized that as always he was along in this world.

That is when he heard her say "Don't worry, You dont have to be alone and hurt ever again." And then he felt her push him over the edge of the hill to his demise.

In the instant everything went blank and than he felt himself transcend into the eternal aftermass and eternal bliss of happyness.

The End
