The Volcanic Goddess and the Flowers

Lani was the goddess of the volcano, and she loved her island more than anything. She had created it with her own fire, and she had filled it with life and beauty. She had planted many flowers on her island, each one with a different color and fragrance. She had red hibiscus, yellow ilima, pink ginger, and white plumeria. But her favorite flower was the lehua, which had a bright red blossom that looked like a flame.

Lani was very proud of her lehua flowers, and she tended to them every day. She watered them with her tears, and she sang to them with her voice. She protected them from the wind and the rain, and she kept them away from the animals and the insects. She wanted them to be perfect and pure, just like her fire.

One day, Lani noticed that some of her lehua flowers were missing. She looked around and saw that someone had picked them and made them into a lei. She was furious and followed the trail of petals to find the culprit. She soon discovered that it was a young man named Koa, who lived in a village on the other side of the island.

Koa was a handsome and brave warrior, who had won many battles and earned many honors. He was also kind and gentle, and he loved nature and music. He had seen Lani’s lehua flowers from afar, and he had been enchanted by their beauty. He had decided to pick some of them and make a lei for his beloved, who was named Leilani.

Leilani was a beautiful and graceful dancer, who had charmed many hearts with her movements and smiles. She was also smart and witty, and she loved stories and jokes. She had met Koa at a festival, and they had fallen in love at first sight. They had decided to get married soon, and they wanted to exchange leis as a symbol of their love.

Lani was enraged when she saw Koa giving her lehua flowers to Leilani. She felt that he had stolen her precious treasures, and that he had defiled her sacred fire. She decided to punish him for his insolence, and she unleashed her wrath upon him. She caused an eruption on her volcano, and she sent a stream of lava towards his village.

Koa saw the danger and warned his people to flee. He grabbed Leilani’s hand and ran with her to the shore. He hoped to find a boat that could take them to safety. But Lani was faster than him, and she blocked his way with a wall of fire.

Koa was trapped between the lava and the flames, and he knew that he had no escape. He hugged Leilani tightly and whispered in her ear: “I love you more than anything, my sweet lehua. You are my life and my joy. Please forgive me for bringing this disaster upon you.”

Leilani kissed him softly and said: “I love you too, my brave koa. You are my soul and my strength. Please don’t blame yourself for this fate.”

They closed their eyes and waited for their end.

But Lani did not kill them. She watched them from above, and she felt something stir in her heart. She saw their love for each other, and she remembered her love for her island. She realized that she had been selfish and cruel, and that she had harmed her own creation. She felt sorry for what she had done, and she decided to spare them.

She stopped the eruption on her volcano, and she cleared the fire from their path. She let them reach the shore safely, where they found a boat waiting for them. She also gave them a gift: she turned their leis into living lehua trees, which would grow forever on their new island.

Lani then spoke to them with a gentle voice: “I am Lani, the goddess of the volcano. I apologize for my anger and my violence. I was wrong to hurt you for picking my flowers. You did not mean any harm or disrespect. You only wanted to express your love for each other.”

Koa bowed his head and said: “We thank you for your mercy and your kindness, Lani. We are sorry for taking your flowers without your permission. We did not know that they belonged to you or that they were sacred to you.”

Lani smiled and said: “You are forgiven, Koa. And you are welcome to take my flowers anytime you want. They are not mine alone; they are yours too. They are part of this island that we all share.”

She then turned to Leilani and said: “You are beautiful, Leilani. And you are wise too. You have taught me something today: that love is more powerful than fire, and that it can heal and create, not just destroy and consume. You have inspired me to be a better goddess, and to care for my island more than myself.”

Leilani smiled and said: “You are generous, Lani. And you are brave too. You have shown us something today: that you can change and grow, not just erupt and burn. You have amazed us with your grace, and with your gift of the lehua trees. They are the most precious thing we have ever received.”

Lani nodded and said: “You are welcome, Leilani. And you are blessed too. You have found your true love, and you have made him happy. You have a bright future ahead of you, and I wish you all the best.”

She then waved goodbye to them and said: “Farewell, Koa and Leilani. May you live long and prosper on your new island. And may you always remember me and my flowers.”

Koa and Leilani thanked her again and boarded the boat. They sailed away to their new home, where they planted their lehua trees and lived happily ever after.

Lani watched them go and felt a warm glow in her chest. She returned to her volcano and looked at her flowers. She saw that they were still beautiful and fragrant, but they were also different. They had a new meaning and a new purpose. They were no longer just her fire; they were also their love.

Lani smiled and felt a new joy in her heart. She watered her flowers with her tears, but they were tears of happiness. She sang to her flowers with her voice, but it was a voice of gratitude. She protected her flowers from the wind and the rain, but she also shared them with the animals and the insects. She wanted them to be perfect and pure, but also free and happy.

Lani was the goddess of the volcano, and she loved her island more than anything. But she also loved Koa and Leilani, who had taught her how to love.
