Grumpy Old Flowers
They called themselves the Grumpy Old Flowers, but they were not really grumpy, old, or flowers. They were a group of ethical hackers who used their skills to expose security vulnerabilities and educate the public about the importance of password protection. They had a motto: "We hack for good, not for evil."
One day, they decided to target a popular social media platform that had millions of users. They wanted to show how easy it was to hack into accounts that used weak passwords, such as "password", "123456", or "qwerty". They also wanted to demonstrate the consequences of using the same password for multiple accounts, which could lead to identity theft, fraud, and blackmail.
They launched a brute force attack, a method that uses trial and error to crack passwords and login credentials. They used a list of the most common passwords and tried them on thousands of accounts. To their surprise, they managed to break into hundreds of accounts in minutes. They then used a credential stuffing attack, the automated use of stolen usernames and passwords to gain unauthorized access to other online accounts. They found out that many users had reused their passwords for their email, banking, shopping, and gaming accounts.
The Grumpy Old Flowers did not want to harm anyone or steal anything. They just wanted to send a message. So they changed the profile pictures and bios of the hacked accounts to images of flowers and slogans like "Protect your password like a flower" or "Don't let hackers pluck your petals". They also sent emails to the account owners with tips on how to create strong passwords and protect their data.
A strong password should be at least 12 characters long and include uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. It should not have any personal information or common words that can be found in a dictionary. It should also be unique for each account. A password manager can help generate and store strong passwords securely.
The Grumpy Old Flowers did not plan to hack the social media platform. It was a random act inspired by the use of the platform by some publicly influential people they had seen staying at the same hotel as them for a hackathon. They were curious to see if they could access their accounts and what secrets they could uncover. They also enjoyed the thrill of hacking, which made the three of them feel like they are opening presents on Christmas morning even after years of experiance.
