The Cryptid Chronicles: Barron County

The sun was setting over the Wisconsin countryside, casting a golden glow over the fields and forests. A young couple, Jake and Lisa, were driving along Highway 25, heading to their cabin by the river. They had rented the place for a weekend getaway, hoping to enjoy some peace and quiet away from the city.

They were chatting happily, listening to some music, and admiring the scenery, when they noticed something strange on the side of the road. It looked like a large pile of rocks, but as they got closer, they realized it was moving. It was a creature, unlike anything they had ever seen before.

It was about six feet tall, with long arms, big nose, and pointed ears. It had glowing red eyes and a mouth full of sharp teeth. It was covered in thick brown hair, except for its chest and belly, which were bare. It was holding a wooden club in one hand, and a dead rabbit in the other.

It was a Troll.

The creature saw the car approaching, and let out a screeching noise. It threw the rabbit aside, and raised its club. It ran towards the car, with an angry expression on its face.

Jake slammed on the brakes, and swerved to avoid hitting the Troll. He lost control of the car, and it skidded off the road. It crashed into a tree, and came to a stop.

Jake and Lisa were both shaken by the impact, but not seriously injured. They looked at each other in shock, and then at the Troll. The creature was still coming towards them, swinging its club.

“Jake, what is that thing?” Lisa asked, terrified.

“I don’t know, Lisa. I don’t know.” Jake said, trying to calm her down.

He reached for his phone, hoping to call for help. But he realized he had no signal. They were in the middle of nowhere.

He looked around, searching for a way out. He saw that the car’s engine was still running, but the front tires were flat. He also saw that there was another road nearby, leading to a bridge over the river.

“Lisa, listen to me. We have to get out of here.” Jake said.

“What? How?” Lisa asked.

“Follow me.” Jake said.

He opened his door, and got out of the car. He grabbed Lisa’s hand, and pulled her out of the passenger seat. They ran towards the other road, hoping to find another car or a house.

The Troll saw them escaping, and roared in anger. It followed them, faster than they expected.

Jake and Lisa reached the road, and crossed it. They saw the bridge ahead of them. It was an old wooden bridge, with metal rails on both sides. It looked sturdy enough to hold them.

They ran onto the bridge, hoping to put some distance between them and the Troll.

But as they crossed the bridge, they heard another sound. It was a loud shriek, coming from above them.

They looked up, and saw another creature flying over them. It was like a cross between a man and a bat. It had a wingspan of about 12 feet, a furry body, clawed hands and feet, and a human-like face. It also had glowing red eyes and a mouth full of sharp teeth.

It was the Wisconsin Man-Bat.

The creature swooped down on them, with its claws extended. It grabbed Lisa by her shoulders, and lifted her off the ground.

Lisa screamed in pain and fear. She tried to kick and punch the creature, but it was too strong.

“Lisa!” Jake shouted.

He reached for her legs, trying to pull her back. But he was too late. The creature flew away with her, disappearing into the night sky.

Jake was left alone on the bridge, with tears in his eyes. He felt helpless and hopeless.

He heard the Troll’s screech behind him. He turned around, and saw it standing at the end of the bridge. It had crossed the road, and was ready to attack him.

Jake had nowhere to run. He had nothing to fight with. He had nothing to live for.

He closed his eyes, and waited for the end.

Jake felt a sudden gust of wind behind him. He opened his eyes, and saw a large shadow looming over him. He thought it was the Wisconsin Man-Bat coming back for him. He braced himself for the final blow.

But instead of feeling pain, he felt a gentle touch on his shoulder. He looked up, and saw a different creature standing next to him. It was about seven feet tall, covered in black hair, and had a strong smell of rotten onions. It had a human-like face, with kind eyes and a gentle smile. It was holding a wooden stick in one hand, and a leather pouch in the other.

It was the Cumberland Beast.

The creature looked at Jake with compassion, and spoke to him in a low and gruff voice.

“Don’t be afraid, human. I am here to help you.”

Jake was stunned by the sight and sound of the creature. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing and hearing.

“Who… who are you?” Jake asked.

“I am one of the guardians of this land. My people call me Waboose, which means White Buffalo. But your people call me the Cumberland Beast.” The creature said.

“What… what do you want from me?” Jake asked.

“Nothing, human. I only want to save you and your mate from the evil ones.” The creature said.

“The evil ones? You mean the Troll and the Man-Bat?” Jake asked.

“Yes, human. They are not of this world. They are invaders from another dimension. They came here through a portal that opened in the sky. They have been hunting and killing humans and animals for their pleasure. They are very dangerous and powerful.” The creature said.

“Then… then how can we stop them?” Jake asked.

“We can’t stop them alone, human. We need to work together. We need to close the portal that brought them here. And we need to do it fast, before more of them come.” The creature said.

“How… how can we do that?” Jake asked.

“I have a way, human. But we need to hurry. Follow me.” The creature said.

The creature took Jake’s hand, and led him across the bridge. Jake followed him, still in shock and disbelief.

They reached the other side of the river, where there was a clearing in the woods. There, Jake saw a large stone circle, with symbols carved on it. In the center of the circle, there was a metal device, with wires and buttons on it.

The creature pointed at the device, and said:

“This is what we need, human. This is what opened the portal. It is a machine that your people made, but they did not know what they were doing. They were trying to explore other worlds, but they unleashed something terrible.”

“Who… who made this?” Jake asked.

“Some of your people who work for a secret organization called DARPA. They have a base nearby, where they do experiments with advanced technology. They brought this machine here, and activated it last night. That’s when the portal opened, and the evil ones came through.” The creature said.

“How… how do you know all this?” Jake asked.

“I have been watching them, human. I have been watching them for a long time. I have learned their language, their ways, their secrets. I have also learned how to use some of their technology. That’s how I found you and your mate.” The creature said.

He opened his leather pouch, and took out a small device that looked like a phone. He showed it to Jake, and said:

“This is how I tracked you down, human. This is a GPS tracker that I took from one of the DARPA agents who came here with the machine. I attached it to your car when you drove past me on the road.”

Jake looked at the device in awe, and then at the creature in wonder.

“You… you are amazing.” Jake said.

“Thank you, human. But we don’t have time for compliments now. We have to act quickly.” The creature said.

He walked towards the machine in the center of the stone circle, and said:

“This machine has a self-destruct button that can close the portal and destroy itself. But it is protected by a code that only the DARPA agents know.”

He looked at Jake, and said:

“Do you know anything about codes or hacking?”

Jake shook his head, and said:

“No, I don’t.”

The creature sighed, and said:

“Then we have to guess it.”

He pressed some buttons on the machine randomly, hoping to get lucky.

But nothing happened.

He tried again.

Still nothing.

He tried once more.

And then…

The machine beeped loudly, and flashed a green light.

The creature smiled, and said:

“We did it, human. We did it.”

He pressed the self-destruct button, and said:

“Stand back, human. It’s going to blow.”

He grabbed Jake, and ran away from the machine.

They reached a safe distance, and watched as the machine exploded in a bright flash of light.

The explosion created a shockwave that shook the ground and the air.

The portal that was in the sky above them closed with a loud bang.

The creature looked at the sky, and said:

“It’s over, human. It’s over.”

He looked at Jake, and said:

“Are you okay, human?”

Jake nodded, and said:

“Yes, I’m okay. Thanks to you.”

He hugged the creature, and said:

“Thank you, Waboose. Thank you for saving me.”

The creature hugged him back, and said:

“You’re welcome, human. You’re welcome.”

They stayed like that for a while, feeling relieved and grateful.

But then they heard another sound.

It was a scream.

The scream was coming from Lisa, who was still in the clutches of the Wisconsin Man-Bat. The creature had taken her to its nest, which was hidden in a cave on a nearby mountain. It was planning to eat her, or worse.

But Lisa was not giving up. She was fighting back, using whatever she could find in the cave. She had managed to grab a sharp rock, and stabbed the creature in the eye. That’s when she screamed, hoping that Jake or someone else would hear her.

Meanwhile, Jake and Waboose heard the scream, and recognized it as Lisa’s voice. They realized that she was still alive, and that they had a chance to save her. They decided to go after the Wisconsin Man-Bat, and rescue Lisa from its nest.

They ran towards the mountain, following the sound of the scream. They hoped they would get there in time, before it was too late.

*** A story about cryptid in my local area (Not including water dwelling cryptids). The part about the troll is inspired by a 1974 encounter. The Man Bat is most commonly seen about 100 miles south however Thinking of some animal territories not out of the realm of possibilities. and the Cumberland Big Foot is inspired by local Native American stories. In this Are Known to be friendly and sometimes helpfull. A protector of the environment.. Personal note. The Troll incednt occured miles from where I live and the habitat I live in is Prime for wild life. Lots of Animals, Next to a stream/small river, farm land and of course viriety of woods. Personally I hear all kinds of things when I am outside at night. Nothing to me is more scarry than the deer as it is Rut Season and they make the most noise Snorting and huffing.I am more scared of getting mauled by a buck than I am by a preditory animal. The preditors keep a respectable distance and the bucks will come within spitting distance. ***
