The Mask of Friendship

Alice and Bob were best friends since childhood. They grew up together, shared their secrets, and supported each other through thick and thin. Alice always admired Bob for his intelligence, charisma, and ambition. Bob always appreciated Alice for her kindness, loyalty, and creativity.

They both had big dreams of becoming successful in their respective fields. Alice wanted to be a famous novelist, and Bob wanted to be a powerful politician. They promised to help each other achieve their goals, no matter what.

But as they grew older, things started to change. Bob became more and more obsessed with his political career, and he began to lie to Alice about his true intentions. He pretended to be her friend, but he secretly envied her talent and popularity. He wanted to use her as a stepping stone to gain more influence and fame.

He lied to her about his opinions, his actions, and his feelings. He lied to her about supporting her, but he actually sabotaged her chances of getting published. He lied to her about being happy for her, but he actually felt bitter and resentful.

Alice, on the other hand, was oblivious to Bob’s deception. She trusted him completely, and she believed that he was her true friend. She continued to share her ideas, her stories, and her emotions with him. She continued to support him, praise him, and encourage him.

She did not notice the subtle signs of his lying, such as his increased heart rate, his sweating, and his pupil dilation. She did not notice the inconsistencies in his stories, the gaps in his memory, and the changes in his behavior. She did not notice the negative emotions that he suppressed in his frontal lobe, the arousal that he felt in his limbic system, and the confusion that he experienced in his parietal lobe.

She did not notice the mask of friendship that he wore, and the slippery slope that he slid down.

Until one day, everything came crashing down.

Alice found out that Bob had betrayed her in the worst possible way. He had stolen her manuscript, and he had published it under his own name. He had claimed that he was the original author, and he had received all the credit, the money, and the fame.

Alice was devastated. She felt hurt, angry, and betrayed. She confronted Bob, and she demanded an explanation.

Bob tried to lie to her again, but he could not do it anymore. His brain was exhausted from lying so much, and his body was showing all the signs of stress. He could not suppress the truth, nor plan the lie. He could not control his emotions, nor his arousal. He could not remember the lies, nor the reality.

He broke down, and he confessed everything. He admitted that he had lied to her for years, and that he had used her for his own benefit. He admitted that he had envied her, and that he had hated her. He admitted that he had never been her friend, and that he had never cared about her.

Alice was shocked. She could not believe what she heard. She felt betrayed, hurt, and angry. She asked him why. Why did he lie to her? Why did he pretend to be her friend? Why did he do this to her?

Bob did not have a good answer. He did not know why he lied to her. He did not know why he pretended to be her friend. He did not know why he did this to her.

He only knew that he wanted to be successful, and that he was willing to do anything to achieve it. He only knew that he was selfish, and that he did not care about anyone else. He only knew that he was a liar, and that he had lost everything.

He only knew that he was sorry, but it was too late.

Alice did not accept his apology. She did not forgive him. She did not want to see him ever again. She left him, and she never looked back.

She took back her manuscript, and she sued him for plagiarism. She won the case, and she reclaimed her rights, her money, and her fame. She published her novel, and she became a best-selling author. She achieved her dream, and she was happy.

But she also lost something. She lost her trust, her friendship, and her innocence. She learned a hard lesson, and she became more cautious, more skeptical, and more guarded. She never trusted anyone again, and she never made another friend.

She only had her stories, and her stories only had her.
