The Time Traveler's Dilemma

Sam had always been fascinated by history. He loved reading books, watching documentaries, and visiting museums. He dreamed of seeing the past with his own eyes, witnessing the events that shaped the world.

That's why he volunteered for the Time Travel Project, a secret experiment conducted by a mysterious organization. They claimed to have invented a device that could send a person back in time, but only for a few minutes. They needed someone to test it and report their findings.

Sam agreed, without hesitation. He was given a small metal bracelet, with a button and a screen. The screen showed the date and time of the destination. The button activated the device. He was instructed to press it once to go back, and again to return.

He was also given a list of rules:

- Do not interact with anyone or anything in the past.
- Do not reveal your identity or purpose to anyone in the past.
- Do not bring anything back from the past.
- Do not stay longer than 10 minutes in the past.

Sam nodded, eager to begin his adventure. He put on the bracelet and pressed the button.

He felt a jolt of electricity, and then everything went black.

When he opened his eyes, he was in a different place. He looked at the screen. It read: April 14, 1865. 10:13 PM. Washington, D.C.

He realized he was in Ford's Theatre, the night of Abraham Lincoln's assassination. He gasped, feeling a surge of excitement and fear. He had read about this moment countless times, but now he was actually there.

He looked around, trying to blend in with the crowd. He saw the president and his wife in their box, enjoying the play. He saw the actor John Wilkes Booth, lurking in the shadows, waiting for his cue. He saw the guard, who was supposed to protect the president, but had left his post.

Sam felt a sudden urge to intervene, to stop the tragedy from happening. He knew he shouldn't, he knew it was against the rules, but he couldn't help himself. He decided to act.

He ran towards the guard, hoping to distract him and make him return to his duty. He shouted, "Hey, you! Where are you going? You're supposed to be guarding the president!"

The guard turned around, startled. He saw Sam, a stranger, wearing strange clothes, holding a strange device. He frowned, suspicious. He asked, "Who are you? What are you doing here?"

Sam realized he had made a mistake. He had drawn attention to himself, and to his bracelet. He panicked. He pressed the button, hoping to escape.

But nothing happened.

He looked at the screen. It read: Error. Device malfunction. Please wait.

He felt a chill of horror. He was stuck in the past, with no way back.

He looked at the guard, who was now angry. He said, "You're a spy, aren't you? You're here to kill the president!"

He grabbed Sam by the collar and dragged him towards the box. He shouted, "Help! Help! I've caught an assassin!"

The crowd heard the commotion and turned to see what was going on. They saw the guard and Sam, struggling near the president's box. They also saw Booth, who had taken advantage of the distraction and sneaked into the box. He aimed his pistol at Lincoln's head and pulled the trigger.

The shot rang out, loud and clear. The president slumped in his seat, mortally wounded. His wife screamed, hysterically. Booth jumped from the box to the stage, breaking his leg. He shouted, "Sic semper tyrannis!" and fled.

The crowd was in shock and chaos. They saw Sam, still held by the guard, who accused him of being Booth's accomplice. They believed him. They were furious. They wanted revenge.

They rushed towards Sam, ready to lynch him. They shouted, "Hang him! Hang him!"

Sam felt a jolt of electricity, and then everything went black.

When he opened his eyes, he was back in the present. He looked at the screen. It read: December 22, 2023. 1:18 AM. Arland, Wisconsin.

He sighed, relieved. He had made it back, somehow. He wondered what had happened to his device, and why it had malfunctioned. He wondered if he had changed history, and what the consequences would be.

He took off the bracelet and returned it to the organization. He told them what had happened, and apologized for breaking the rules. They said they would investigate the matter, and thanked him for his service.

They also told him to keep quiet about his experience, and to never speak of it to anyone.

Sam agreed, but he couldn't forget what he had seen and done. He felt guilty and ashamed. He wondered if he had saved or doomed the world.

He decided to find out.

He went online and searched for information about Lincoln's assassination. He was shocked by what he found.

He had changed history, indeed.

But not in the way he expected.

He learned that Lincoln had survived the shot, but had been left paralyzed and brain-damaged. He had remained in office, but had been unable to govern. He had become a puppet of his radical advisers, who had pursued a harsh and vengeful policy towards the South. They had imposed harsh taxes, confiscated lands, and executed rebels. They had sparked a second civil war, which had lasted for decades and had killed millions.

He learned that the United States had never recovered from the war, and had fallen into decline and disarray. He learned that the world had become a darker and more dangerous place, plagued by wars, famines, diseases, and disasters. He learned that humanity had never reached the moon, or the stars, or the internet.

He learned that he had ruined everything.

He wished he could go back and undo his mistake.

But he couldn't.

He was stuck in the present, with no way back.

He felt a jolt of electricity, and then everything went black.

---

He woke up in a hospital bed. He felt a sharp pain in his chest. He looked around, confused. He saw a nurse, wearing a white uniform and a mask. She noticed him and smiled.

"Hello, Mr. Smith. You're awake. How are you feeling?" she asked.

Sam tried to speak, but his throat was dry. He croaked, "What happened? Where am I?"

The nurse handed him a glass of water. He drank it, gratefully. She said, "You had a heart attack, Mr. Smith. You were lucky. We found you in time and brought you here. You're in the Arland General Hospital. It's December 22, 2023."

Sam felt a wave of relief. He was still in the present, not the past. He wondered if his time travel experience had been a dream, or a hallucination. He asked, "What about the bracelet? The time travel device?"

The nurse looked puzzled. She said, "What bracelet? What device? You didn't have anything like that when we found you. You were lying on the floor, clutching your chest, in your apartment. Do you remember?"

Sam shook his head. He didn't remember anything after he searched for information about Lincoln's assassination. He wondered if the organization had taken the device back, and erased his memory. He wondered if they had fixed the timeline, and restored the original history.

He decided to find out.

He asked the nurse, "Can I use your phone? I need to check something."

The nurse hesitated, but then nodded. She said, "Sure, but only for a minute. You need to rest, Mr. Smith. You've been through a lot."

She handed him her phone. He thanked her and turned it on. He opened the browser and searched for information about Lincoln's assassination. He was shocked by what he found.

He had changed history, again.

But not in the way he expected.

He learned that Lincoln had never existed, but had been a myth. He had been invented by a group of storytellers, who had used his name and his image to inspire and to entertain. He had been a legend, and a hero.

He learned that the group had spread their stories across the world, and had influenced the culture and the history of the people. They had created a utopian vision, and a heaven on earth.

He learned that he had saved everything.

He wished he could stay and enjoy his success.

But he couldn't.

He was stuck in the present, with no way back.

He felt a jolt of electricity, and then everything went black.

He woke up in a hospital bed. He felt a sharp pain in his chest. He looked around, confused. He saw a nurse, wearing a white uniform and a mask. She noticed him and smiled.

Sam felt a wave of despair. He was still in the present, not the past. He realized that his time travel experience had been a reality, and a curse. He realized that he had broken the bracelet, the time travel device. He realized that he had created a loop, and a trap.

He realized that he had changed history, again and again.

But not in the way he wanted.

He realized that he had doomed everything.

He wished he could go back and undo his mistake.

But he couldn't.

He was stuck in the present, with no way back.

He felt a jolt of electricity, and then everything went black.

And so it went on, endlessly.

Sam was trapped in a loop, a paradox, a nightmare.

He was doomed to repeat the same cycle, over and over.

He was doomed to change history, again and again.

But not in the way he wanted.

He was doomed to doom everything.

He was doomed to never escape.

He was doomed to never wake up.

The end.
