Emergency Alert: The First Snowfall of 2023

This is an emergency weather broadcast for the state of Wisconsin. Please listen carefully and follow the instructions.

A severe winter storm is approaching the region, bringing heavy snow, strong winds, and dangerous wind chills. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for most of the state, effective from 6 p.m. today until 6 p.m. tomorrow. The warning means that significant amounts of snow, sleet, and ice are expected or occurring, making travel very hazardous or impossible.

The storm is expected to dump 8 to 12 inches of snow across the state, with higher amounts possible in some areas. The snow will be accompanied by gusty winds of up to 40 mph, creating blizzard-like conditions and reducing visibility to near zero. The wind chill factor will drop to as low as -25°F in some places, increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

This is a life-threatening situation. Do not attempt to travel unless it is absolutely necessary. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle and call 911. If you are at home, stay indoors and keep warm. Check on your neighbors, especially the elderly and those with special needs. Avoid using generators, grills, or other devices that produce carbon monoxide indoors.

We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available. Stay tuned to this station for more information. This is an emergency weather broadcast for the state of Wisconsin.

Cut to Wisconsin News Studio

News Anchor: Good evening, Wisconsin. We interrupt our regular programming to bring you this breaking news. A massive winter storm is bearing down on our state, threatening to bring blizzard conditions and life-threatening cold. We have our meteorologist, Bob, on the line with the latest update. Bob, what can you tell us?

Meteorologist: Thanks, Lisa. As you can see on the radar, this storm is a monster. It’s moving fast and it’s packing a punch. We’re expecting 8 to 12 inches of snow across most of the state, with higher amounts possible in some areas. The snow will be accompanied by gusty winds of up to 40 mph, creating whiteout conditions and reducing visibility to near zero. The wind chill factor will drop to as low as -25°F in some places, increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

News Anchor: That sounds terrifying, Bob. What should people do to prepare and stay safe?

Meteorologist: Well, Lisa, the best thing to do is to stay indoors and keep warm. If you have to go outside, dress warmly in layers and cover your exposed skin. Avoid overexertion and stay hydrated. If you are driving, make sure your car is winterized and have a survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle and call for help.

News Anchor: And what about people who use wood stoves or fireplaces to heat their homes?

Meteorologist: That’s a good question, Lisa. Wood stoves and fireplaces can be a great source of heat, but they also pose some hazards. You should only use dry, seasoned wood that has less than 20 percent moisture content. You should also have your chimney and stovepipe inspected and cleaned annually by a professional. Keep flammable items away from your fireplace or wood stove, and never start a fire with gasoline, kerosene, or charcoal starter. And don’t forget to install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home and check them regularly.

News Anchor: Thank you, Bob, for those important tips. We’ll be back with more updates on this developing story as they become available. Stay tuned to Wisconsin News for more information. This is Lisa Smith reporting live from the studio.

In the meantime, we want to remind you of some other tips that can help you prepare and stay safe during this power outage. Here are some of the things you should do:

  • Keep freezers and refrigerators closed as much as possible to prevent food spoilage. If the power is out for more than four hours, you may need to discard perishable food such as meat, dairy, and eggs. Check the temperature of your food before you eat it and when in doubt, throw it out.
  • Use a generator, but ONLY outdoors and away from windows. Generators can produce deadly carbon monoxide fumes that can build up in your home and harm you and your family. Never use a generator inside your home, basement, garage, or near any air intake vents. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and have a working carbon monoxide detector in your home.
  • Do not use a gas stove or oven to heat your home. This can also cause carbon monoxide poisoning and fire hazards. Use alternative heating sources such as fireplaces, wood stoves, or space heaters, but make sure they are properly vented and away from flammable materials. Never leave them unattended and keep children and pets away from them.
  • Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges. When the power comes back on, it may cause voltage fluctuations that can harm your devices. Unplug any sensitive equipment such as computers, TVs, microwaves, and chargers. You can leave one light on to let you know when the power is restored.
  • Have alternate plans for refrigerating medicines or using power-dependent medical devices. If you or someone in your household relies on medication that needs refrigeration or equipment that runs on electricity, such as oxygen concentrators or dialysis machines, you need to have a backup plan. Contact your health care provider or pharmacist for advice on how to store your medicine or use your device during a power outage. You may also need to go to a location that has power or call 911 if it is an emergency.
  • Stay at home and avoid unnecessary travel. Driving during a power outage can be dangerous, especially at night or in bad weather conditions. Traffic lights may not work, creating confusion and accidents. Road signs may not be visible, making navigation difficult. Fallen trees or power lines may block roads or pose hazards. If you must travel, make sure your car is winterized and have a survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle and call for help.

News Anchor: Let us take a look around the community and see how people are dealing with the situation.

Chapter 1: The Onset of the Storm

As the snow began to fall heavily over the Wisconsin countryside, the residents braced themselves for the worst. Among them was Sarah, a seasoned local who knew all too well the perils of winter weather. She had already stocked up on essentials and checked her wood stove to ensure it was in working order. Sarah’s home was a cozy haven, but she worried about her friends in town, especially those who might attempt the treacherous journey on snow-covered roads.

Chapter 2: The Journey Through the Blizzard

John, a friend of Sarah’s, decided to make the trip from town to check on his family’s farm. He packed his car with a winter survival kit, including blankets, food, water, and a first-aid kit. As he drove through the blinding snow, he remembered Sarah’s advice: “If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle and call for help.” The roads were nearly deserted, and John felt a mix of fear and determination as he pressed on.

Chapter 3: Warmth and Safety at Home

Back at her house, Sarah tended to her wood stove, adding logs carefully and monitoring the fire. She knew that dry, seasoned wood burned best and kept a close eye on the stovepipe for any signs of obstruction. The warmth from the stove filled her home as she sat down with a cup of tea, listening to the howling wind outside.

Chapter 4: Community in the Cold

Despite the storm’s fury, the people of Wisconsin showed their resilience. Neighbors checked on each other through phone calls and messages, ensuring everyone had enough heat and supplies. The local emergency services were on high alert, ready to respond to any incidents. The community’s spirit shone bright against the backdrop of the harsh winter weather.

Chapter 5: Aftermath and Recovery

The storm eventually passed, leaving behind a blanket of snow that transformed the landscape into a winter wonderland. The people of Wisconsin emerged from their homes to shovel driveways and clear paths. They shared stories of the night before and helped each other recover from the storm’s impact. Life in Wisconsin was tough, but so were its people.

Chapter 6: A Cozy Morning

HeartThrob woke up to the sound of his alarm clock with amplified buzzing on the bookshelf, which was set to remind him the day is starting. He stretched and yawned, feeling the warmth of his bed and the softness of his pillow. He glanced at the window and saw the snowflakes falling gently from the sky, covering the ground with a thick layer of white. He smiled and thought to himself, “What a beautiful day.”

He got up and put on his slippers and robe, then headed to the kitchen to make himself a cup of hot chocolate. He added some whipped cream and sprinkles, then took a sip. He felt the chocolate melt in his mouth and warm his throat. He savored the moment, then grabbed a bag of marshmallows and a stick from the pile of wood next to the stove.

He pulled up a camping chair in the dining room, where his wood stove was crackling with fire. He opened the door and added some logs, making sure they were dry and seasoned. He closed the door and adjusted the damper, then sat down on his couch. He turned on his phone and logged into his class in the Genius Room, on the X-Space platform that connected him with other gifted geniuses from around the world.

He listened to the Genius Room Begin with morning greetings with thoughts and concept of SMART goals, which stood for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. He nodded along, counting steps taken and the next ones to come. He had set some SMART goals for himself, such as learning a new more impactful way to deliver a message, mastering AI art as the medium of building connection with others he calls community, and writing his journey down with the idea of turning each blog into an AI video. He is confident that he can achieve them as they all are steps to the overall goal of becomming a better leader and with hard work and dedication organizing content with efforts from other communities to host spaces, it will happen as HeartThrob grows like his FlowersOfAppreciation.

He decided to multitask and roast some marshmallows while he listened to his class. He stuck a marshmallow on his stick and held it over the fire, watching it turn golden brown. He pulled it out and blew on it, then popped it in his mouth. He felt the gooey sweetness explode on his tongue. He repeated the process until he had eaten a few marshmallows, then washed them down with his hot chocolate.

He looked at the clock and realized that he had an hour left before his class ended. He thought about what he wanted to do after that. He knew he had to get more wood from outside and shovel the driveway clean of snow. He also wanted to enjoy the freedom of nature and have some "fun" in the snow that actually translates to random yard work.

He got up and went to his closet, where he had all his winter gear ready. He laid out the many layers of clothing he would need, including heated socks, a heated jacket, electric hand warmers, and an all importaint face mask, stocking hat, couple hoodies to encapsul under his overalls. Layers of thermal underwar, sweat pants boots and gloves complete this scubby looking outfit. Who cares, when saftey and staying warm is the challenge to overcome. It was not his first winter and his confidence was strong as he finished his class and set out to enjoy the day.

***The actual weather is 18F/-8C at sunrise, high of 35F/2C Winds a 5 MPH making it feel slightly colder 50% ish cloud coverage all day. Personal side note. The coldest temperatures I have experianced was more than -75F/-60C with wind chill. Yes. It gets colder here than Alaska***
