<p id="first">Humans like to discover. Presented with something we&rsquo;ve never seen before, most of us will be compelled to explore and learn more about it. The same can&rsquo;t exactly be said for our closest living relatives &mdash; the great apes. Although decades of studies have shown that captive chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans will eagerly explore unfamiliar objects in a laboratory, great apes have rarely been observed in these encounters in the wild. As such, almost nothing is known about how great apes respond to novelty in the natural habitats in which they evolved. Now, a team from the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior (MPI-AB) has succeeded in measuring the behavior of wild orangutans in their first encounter with an unfamiliar object. The experiments, conducted in an Indonesian rainforest, uncovered a mix of social, environmental, and age factors that made orangutans more likely to explore. Published in&nbsp;<em>Scientific Reports</em>, the study reveals the conditions that spark curiosity in orangutans, and sheds light on how our own curious natures might have evolved.</p>
<p>The team studied orangutans at a long-term monitoring site, Suaq Balimbing, in Sumatra. Orangutans at the site have been habituated over decades to the presence of humans, thus offering scientists a rare opportunity to observe wild great apes at close range. Caroline Schuppli, director of the Suaq Project and the study&rsquo;s first author, became interested in how wild orangutans would react when presented with something unfamiliar.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Curiosity is a trait that has driven the exceptional ability of humans to learn and innovate,&rdquo; says Schuppli, a group leader at MPI-AB. &ldquo;If we want to know how the trait evolved in us, we have to study it in our closest living relatives.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Curiosity, which describes an individual&rsquo;s motivation to learn about the unknown, has been studied before in great apes; however, due to the logistical difficulties of studying wild animals, almost all tests have occurred in captivity. &ldquo;We know that apes are very curious to explore when they are in the safe and controlled conditions of a zoo,&rdquo; says Schuppli. &ldquo;But these results tell us little about what really triggered or suppressed curiosity over our evolutionary history.&rdquo;</p>
<p>About ten years ago, Schuppli and collaborators first attempted to assess curiosity in wild orangutans with an experiment inspired by captive studies. They roamed Suaq, peppering the forest with foreign objects for the orangutans to find: a bright red flag; plastic flowers and fruits; a stuffed toy. The results were stark. &ldquo;They hardly ever came near any of the items,&rdquo; she remembers. &ldquo;You could see them making huge circles in the forest to avoid the experiment.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Schuppli realized that testing orangutans&rsquo; reaction to novelty in nature would require reimagining the past paradigm. &ldquo;The challenge was figuring out how to entice them with something that was novel, but also familiar enough not to scare them off,&rdquo; she says. Over the years Schuppli perfected just such an object: a piece of tree trunk with a natural hole filled with local forest honey. The tree hole and food were familiar, but deploying these in an unusual way represented a novel foraging situation. With a team of local and international scientists, Schuppli hoisted the experimental log into trees about 10 meters from orangutans &mdash; and watched what happened.</p>
<p>During the trials, the orangutans spent on average 30 minutes in the vicinity of the novel log. During this time, they explored the novel log by intensively observing it over extended periods of time and approaching it closely. Overall, however, orangutans rarely touched the branch directly; and when they did, they often used a tool, such as a stick to do so. &ldquo;The orangutans were pretty cautious,&rdquo; says Tri Rahmaeti, a team member from Universitas Nasional in Indonesia and co-author on the study. &ldquo;The honey reward could have easily been scooped out of the log using a finger, but they still preferred to use a tool so they didn&rsquo;t have to make physical contact.&rdquo;</p>
<p>But there were significant differences in the behaviors. Using statistical techniques, the team uncovered traits of individuals and features in the environment that amplified exploration. Young orangutans were far more likely than adults to observe and approach. And, orangutans were more likely to approach the log if they saw another individual heading that way too. The habitat also seemed to play a role: in areas with abundant food, orangutans observed more but approached less.</p>

<p>Says Schuppli: &ldquo;On the one hand, the results confirmed our hunch that orangutans in the wild are not that keen to explore new objects. This could be because in nature, orangutans live very long lives in stable habitats where novelty is rare. So, the potential risk of approaching something unknown doesn&rsquo;t outweigh the potential reward.&rdquo;</p>
<p>&ldquo;On the other hand, the experiment showed that there is flexibility in the behavior. Orangutans have the potential to be curious about novelty in nature, but only under certain conditions. And by experimentally testing this in a wild population, we pinned down the conditions.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Of these conditions, Schuppli finds the social factor most illuminating. &ldquo;Orangutans are the least social of all great apes, and yet we find that the presence of association partners increases their curiosity,&rdquo; she says.</p>
<p>This has fascinating implications for understanding learning and innovation &mdash; the products of curiosity that fueled the success of our species. &ldquo;We often think of learning and innovation as solo acts, but this might not have been the case in our early history,&rdquo; says Schuppli. &ldquo;If novelty was the spark, then our social lives might have provided the accelerant.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Considered one of the most iconic species of Australian wildlife, the Koala is an arboreal folivorous marsupial known for its ash-grey fluffy fur. Koalas are slipping under the radar with populations in Southern Australia being healthy while half of some populations in Northern Australia have gone extinct. They have a broad range spanning 3,000kms and due to their large range, they are often viewed as a wholistic population. The northern half and subspecies in NSW and QLD have had catastrophic losses and are on the trajectory for extinction by 2050 at the current rate of decline.</p>
<p>This project will improve the species&rsquo; trajectory and create a safe haven, preventing extinction should the pattern of decline continue. While approximately 1,000 Koalas exist in captivity in Australia, due to poor genetics and disease risk, the captive population does not provide any level of support to the wild population. Rather, it is a critical vector for community to learn and engage with the species.</p>
<p><strong>Threats</strong></p>
<p>Due to the niche diet and habitat requirements of this species, as well as the large and varied threats they face in the wild, Koalas are in decline throughout most of their natural range. Their decline is mostly due to widespread habitat destruction, bushfire and disease. Land clearing resulting in habitat loss is the single biggest threat, reiterating the critical need for the protection of remnant habitat. The species also faces threats of habitat fragmentation due to a lack of habitat corridors, dog attack, and road strike. Over 80% of Koala habitat has been lost with the remaining 20% fragmented and vulnerable to intense bushfire which has an ability to decimate remaining populations within only days, as seen recently in the 2019-2020 NSW Bushfires.</p>
<p><strong>Distribution</strong></p>
<p>Koalas have lost 80% of habitat from their former range and are severely fragmented throughout in what remains.</p>

<p><strong>Species Recovery</strong></p>
<p>1. The Project will achieve species recovery with Koala Ark being the first project to impact the trajectory of wild Koalas in NSW by protecting approximately 7% of the wild population.</p>
<p>2. Koala Ark will enable rehabilitated Koalas to be released to a safe wild environment with a soft release into 3 stages of wild environments (400Ha, 1000Ha, and 5000Ha) all which are monitored and managed for their protection.</p>
<p><strong>Habitat Recovery</strong></p>
<p>3. Koala Ark will move into habitat recovery, protecting 7,000 hectares of habitat for Koala.</p>
<p><strong>Deliverables</strong></p>
<p>Aussie Ark prides itself on its pioneering successes in species recovery of threatened Australian wildlife through the establishment of robust insurance programs that are genetically representative of their species and behaviourally suitable for wild release, all while achieving cost-effectiveness and creating populations suitable for re-wildling.</p>

<p>Declawing house cats to keep them from scratching people and furniture is controversial &mdash; and even banned in some countries and areas in the U.S. &mdash; but the practice is not limited to house cats. In a new study, researchers looked at the effects of declawing on larger cat species and found that declawing disproportionately impacts their muscular capabilities as compared to their smaller brethren.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&ldquo;What people might not realize is that declawing a cat is not like trimming our fingernails; rather, it is removing part or all of the last bone of each digit,&rdquo; says Adam Hartstone-Rose, professor of biological sciences at North Carolina State University and corresponding author of the research. &ldquo;Like us, each cat finger has three bones, and declawing is literally cutting that third bone off at the joint.&rdquo;</p>
<p>The researchers looked at the muscular anatomy of over a dozen exotic cats &mdash; from smaller species including bobcats, servals and ocelots, to lions and tigers &mdash; to determine the effect of declawing on their forelimb musculature.</p>
<p>They measured muscle density and mass, and also examined muscle fibers from both clawed and declawed exotic cats. They found that for the larger species declawing resulted in 73% lighter musculature in the forearm&rsquo;s digital flexors. These muscles are involved in unsheathing the claws. They also found that overall, forelimb strength decreased by 46% to 66%, depending on the size of the animal, and that other muscles in the forelimb did not compensate for these reductions.</p>
<p>&ldquo;When you think about what declawing does functionally to a housecat, you hear about changes in scratching, walking or using the litter box,&rdquo; says Lara Martens, NC State undergraduate student and lead author of the research. &ldquo;But with big cats, there&rsquo;s more force being put through the paws. So if you alter them, it is likely that the effects will be more extreme.&rdquo;</p>
<p>This is because paw size and body mass don&rsquo;t scale up at a 1:1 ratio. Paw area increases at a slower rate than does body mass (which is proportional to volume), so larger cats have smaller feet relative to their body size, and their paws must withstand more pressure.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Additionally, big cats are more reliant on their forelimbs &mdash; they bear most of the weight, and these bigger cats use their forelimbs to grapple because they hunt much larger prey,&rdquo; Martens says. &ldquo;So biomechanically speaking, declawing has a more anatomically devastating effect in larger species.&rdquo;</p>
<p>&ldquo;As scientists, it is our job to objectively document the effects of this surgery on the animals,&rdquo; Hartstone-Rose says, &ldquo;but it is hard to ignore the cruelty of this practice. These are amazing animals, and we should not be allowed to cripple them, or any animals, in this way.&rdquo;</p>

<p id="first">Extinct dwarf hippos that once roamed Madagascar lived in forests rather than open grasslands preferred by common hippos on mainland Africa, researchers at the University of Cincinnati discovered.</p>
<p>The findings suggest grasslands that now cover much of the enormous island off the eastern coast of southern Africa were a relatively recent change facilitated by people rather than a natural habitat sustained in part by these famously large vegetarians.</p>
<p>The study was published in the journal&nbsp;<em>Plants, People, Planet</em><em>.</em></p>
<p>When Madagascar broke away from Africa&rsquo;s mainland 150 million years ago, its plants and animals evolved in geographic isolation in the Indian Ocean. Madagascar had no elephants, giraffes, rhinos or other big mammals like those found on the mainland today.</p>
<p>But it did have hippos.</p>
<p>About the size of a cow, the dwarf or Malagasy hippo was far smaller than its four-ton cousin, the common hippopotamus. Even so, the Malagasy hippopotamus was among the largest land animals on the island along with Nile crocodiles and the flightless and enormous elephant bird.</p>
<p>These hippos likely resembled today&rsquo;s secretive and endangered pygmy hippos found in the forests and swamps of West Africa&rsquo;s Liberia and Guinea, said Brooke Crowley, a UC professor of geosciences and anthropology and lead author of the study.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Ecologically, we think the Malagasy dwarf hippos were pretty close to the pygmy hippos that live in forests in West Africa,&rdquo; Crowley said.</p>
<p>Crowley and her research colleagues conducted an isotopic analysis of stable carbon and nitrogen found in the bones of extinct Malagasy dwarf hippos that roamed the island more than 1,000 years ago. These isotopes, found in the bones of animals, leave behind a fingerprint of the foods they ate. And this provides clues about their preferred habitats.</p>
<p>Researchers took samples from the bones of dwarf hippos at museums along with those the team collected on the island. They found that dwarf hippos did not regularly graze on grass in dry, open habitats, even in regions dominated by grassland today. Instead, they preferred plants found in the wetter, more forested landscapes. This suggests forest was more abundant before people began changing the landscape to grow cultivated plants, graze domesticated cows and goats and obtain firewood and building materials.</p>
<p>Common hippos on the mainland love grass. Their name derives from the Greek words for &ldquo;river horse.&rdquo; Each night they leave the safety of rivers and waterholes to find fresh pasture, cropping grass like a horse, before returning in the morning.</p>
<p>But the researchers&rsquo; analysis found that grass represented only a small part of the diet of Malagasy dwarf hippos. Instead, they behaved more like browsers, feeding on sedges and leaves. As a result, hippos likely had little influence on maintaining or expanding grasslands on the island.</p>
<p>&ldquo;For years we&rsquo;ve seen evidence that these animals were not grazers,&rdquo; said Laurie Godfrey, a study co-author and professor emerita at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.</p>
<p>Godfrey said there is evidence to suggest that people caused the extinction of hippos on the island when they created permanent communities and moved from hunting and gathering to raising domestic animals and crops. She calls her idea the &ldquo;Subsistence Shift Hypothesis,&rdquo; which she said is an elaboration on a similar idea first proposed by noted archaeologist Robert Dewar.</p>
<p>&ldquo;There is pretty compelling convergent evidence showing that many of the extinct animals disappeared in a short window of time coinciding with the transition of people from hunting and gathering to pastoralism,&rdquo; UC&rsquo;s Crowley said.</p>
<p>Crowley thinks restoring native forests is key to helping conserve wildlife on the island. Based on their study, expansive grasslands were not a critical habitat, at least for the island&rsquo;s hippos.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Some colleagues argue that grasslands are ancient and that we need to protect and manage them like we do forest,&rdquo; Crowley said. &ldquo;I would argue that forests are far more important. We are not contending that grasses did not exist in the past, but pointing out that there is no evidence for large grasslands devoid of trees prior to about 1,000 years ago.&rdquo;</p>
<p>It&rsquo;s a point the researchers make in the study as well.</p>
<p>&ldquo;It is clear that Madagascar faces a biodiversity crisis much greater than that which it has already endured. Preventing this crisis will demand new conservation actions,&rdquo; the study concluded.</p>

<p><strong class="" data-entity-type="MessageEntityBold">Home</strong> improvement giant Lowe's this week released a physical garden flag featuring characters from mfers, a popular non-fungible token (NFT) project that exists in the public domain under a Creative Commons classification known as a CC0 license. Under this designation, anyone can use mfers NFT characters to create any type of commercial good, which is exactly what Stephen Thompson and his brother-in-law Matthew Varnell did. "This is the PFP [profile picture] project if you ever wanted to do anything fun," Thompson, a lawyer by trade, told CoinDesk. The two men recently started a company called Total Marketing Web3, or TM3 for short, as an umbrella company to oversee different projects that will combine NFT lore and real-world commercial products. Their first product called the "Evergreen Siezenals" garden flag is 1 foot wide by 1.5 feet high and features the phrase "cc0 summer 2023" above an image of two NFT characters sipping tropical drinks on the beach. The flag, referred to as "seizen #1/edition #1" in the website description, retails for $39.98. According to Thompson and Varnell's website, there will only be 1,000 available, with each flag linked to a replica NFT redeemable online.</p>

 NFL Rivals Scores 1M Downloads for NFT-Based Mobile Game

<p>NFL Rivals, a free-to-play game from Mythical Games, has managed to score over a million downloads despite debuting amidst a harsh crypto environment and in the off-season of the NFL itself. Debuting on April 26 in the Google Play and Apple Stores, the game was met with early enthusiasm, rising to the top spot in the App Store, which Mythical Games CEO John Linden captured on Twitter at the time. &ldquo;We're sitting at a 4.8 out of five on [the App Store] with nearly 22,000 reviews, which is great.&rdquo;. Other stats shared with CoinDesk by Mythical Games noted that NFL Rivals has seen nearly 15 million matches played and that on average, players have six gaming sessions per day, showing the stickiness of the experience. The fact that the player cards are NFTs is &ldquo;behind the scenes&rdquo; for most players, Linden noted, who are able to play the game without purchasing any NFTs. &ldquo;Every player gets a wallet in the game, and then most of them probably don't know it's a wallet until they want to start interacting with the marketplace to buy, sell or trade.&rdquo; The NFTs in the game are player cards used to build out teams and compete in the game. Each player card has different rarity levels from common to legendary and are assigned different strengths and weaknesses.</p>

<p><strong class="" data-entity-type="MessageEntityBold">Volatility</strong> Shares&rsquo; 2x Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITX) will become the first leveraged crypto ETF available in the United States after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) let it go effective on Friday, an executive at the company told CoinDesk. The regulator has not denied the application for the 2x ETF, Volatility Shares Chief Investment Officer Stuart Barton said, paving the way for its launch this upcoming Tuesday. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s exciting to see digital assets in the ETF wrapper,&rdquo; Barton said. A leveraged 2x ETF allows customers to gain bitcoin exposure by only putting up half the value of the bitcoin. A prospectus filing said the ETF would correspond with the CME Bitcoin Futures Daily Roll Index. This comes in the wake up of bitcoin&rsquo;s value steadily rising past $30,000 after multiple major traditional investment companies like BlackRock filed an application for spot bitcoin ETFs with the SEC. While a number of futures-based ETF products already trade, the SEC has consistently blocked spot products from launching. Other leveraged bitcoin futures products have also failed to secure the necessary approvals to launch.</p>
